Walking along a row of terrace houses in Melawati, one immediately notices a striking white residence. The Teresformasi House, derived from a fusion of teres (terrace) and transformasi (transformation), reflects 6IX Design Office (6IXDO) intention to reinterpret the conventional 1980s typology terrace house to a contemporary, light-filled, and family-oriented living environment.

A Gentle Hello in Peeling Brickwork

At the front entrance, the brick facade peels back like a gentle, welcoming gesture, immediately engaging visitors with its tactile presence.

The facade features a secondary skin not only for their tactile richness but also that softly filters sunlight, reducing heat gain while allowing natural light to permeate the interiors. As light passes through the brickwork, dappled patterns and shifting shadows animate the space, creating a sense of tropical serenity.

The peeled-back brick wall at the front creates a subtle opening that transforms the facade into a frame for the landscape beyond. Through this aperture, the interior is offered a serene and focused glimpse of the Bukit Tabur Quartz Ridge, connecting the living spaces within to the surrounding nature.

Optimizing Space Through Spatial Reorganization

The layout is optimized through the introduction of a sunken living area to define spatial boundaries, a simplified staircase to improve space efficiency, and a modest rear extension to provide sufficient living space for the family.

At the heart of the house, an airwell acts as both a spatial organizer and a source of natural light and ventilation, with spaces arranged around it in a thoughtful served-and-servant hierarchy.

The living room and kitchen unfold as open, fluid spaces that invite social interaction and foster a sense of connection. Private and service areas are carefully compacted to support functionality without interrupting the spatial flow.

This arrangement creates a seamless continuity throughout the home, enhancing openness and light while preserving intimacy and practicality for everyday living.

The continuous use of timber, extending from the flooring into the furniture, enhances the fluidity of the communal space, with the dining table serving as a refined centerpiece where meals, conversation, and stories unfold with ease.

Shaping Exterior & Interior Cohesion Through Material

Brick, timber, and concrete form the primary material palette, shaping the character and rhythm of the space. Timber softens and warms the interior, while brick articulates boundaries and mediates the transition from exterior to interior. Together, the textures and tones guide movement, define distinct zones, and create a tactile continuity that unites the house.

To enrich both tactile and visual experience, brickwork embedded with recycled chippings was used to create a subtle terrazzo-like texture, adding depth, character, and a sense of craftsmanship.

Teresformasi illustrates how reimagining function, flow, and spatial connections can revitalize existing housing in Malaysian cities. It not only preserves the essence of the original terrace typology but also adapts it to contemporary family life, demonstrating the potential of architecture to harmonize original form, functionality, and modern living.
